The Local 913: Dan Bubien & The Delta Struts
Dan Bubien picked up his guitar as a teenager and never put it down. After a sports injury found him laid up for a while, he discovered that the blues had an irresistible draw for him. Bubien says, "I’ve heard before that people like music for 2 reasons; one being pain and one being happiness. I think it’s the pain thing that got me."
After releasing a pair of acclaimed albums under his own name, Bubien decided to go all in with his band, The Delta Struts. "They’re good people," he says. "They’re good guys and I feel that it made such a difference on the album. I’ve wanted to get rid of my name for a long time and I also wanted the guys to feel invested." That investment is paying off in a big way. The Delta Struts weave a bluesy web of soulful roots rock that pulls the listener in and doesn’t let go. The new album, Theives and Yesterdays deals with popular blues fodder like love and the loss of time.Bubien explained that, "Time can be a thief. If you pursue the wrong people and the wrong obsessions, you look back and think, 'Where did my time go? It was stolen away.' You let it happen."
Music can certainly be a great form of therapy, but it can also, of course, elicit joy like no other. "Shirley" is a bluesy soulful excursion that captivates the listener and the guys who wrote it. Just don’t ask Bubien who the song is about. "I don’t know who Shirley is," he says with a laugh. "I’ve never met her. I have no idea who she is, but I know she exists. It’s some of the most fun I’ve ever had writing a song."
