Local 913, Episode 82: Brooke Annibale

In 2015 Pittsburgh singer songwriter Brooke Annibale released her fourth album, The Simple Fear. On the strength of her evocative and intimate songs and performance Annibale was named WYEP’s Local artist of the year. In 2016, four songs from the album were remixed by Jake Hanner and jcm. Annibale explains how the remixes took a surprising turn:
“Usually the goal of making a remix is to make a dance track or something like that. I feel like my goal was just the opposite. It was just to strip back some of the layers of the production and bring out the more electronic elements of these songs. We actually ended up with more chill versions of the songs.”
Annibale explains why she chose to work with Jake Hanner and what he brought out in her music:
“I worked with two people on this remix project, including Jake Hanner, who did the “Patience” remix. I’m a big fan of a lot of things he’s done locally and with Donora. I thought this was a good opportunity to try out working with Jake: take something that already exists and see what he’d mold it into. What Jake did was emphasize more of the piano parts, which had been in the background. He re-recorded extra piano parts for this track. I thought it was really interesting to hear my voice over an instrument that I don’t usually hear my voice with.”
