Local 913, Episode 66: Delicious Pastries

After bonding over interests in rare 1960s pop, Jonathan Chamberlain and Jesse Ley got together for a songwriting session and then found themselves forming the experimental rock band Delicious Pastries. The group put out their debut Pretty Please in 2011 and four years later, they have just released the follow-up, Aleatoric Delay.
Ley: “I stumbled across that word; Aleatoric. It basically means compositions that include spontaneous or random sounds. Then I thought we needed to top that off with something, so we just said Aleatoric Delay! I think that was Jonathan’s idea. It had a poetic elegance to it.”
Chamberlain: “It took 4 years to come out! Delay was something we were very familiar with at the time... Delay is also a musical term. It made sense.”
Delicious Pastries has grown to a six piece band where everyone in the group is a multi-instrumentalist, which has led to Jonathan and Jesse finding out surprising talents from their band-mates.
Chamberlain: “Initially, when we had Dan, our keyboardist, interviewing for the band, I told him I wanted him to play this melody that I showed him with my right hand. Then I said the bass was going to be playing this part, so then I played him a part with my left hand. Then he said ‘Oh! You mean this?’ and he started playing both parts at the same time. Then I said ‘Ok, I think you should be playing keyboards in this band!’... Even Vincent, our bassist, stepped forward and offered to mix the record. We didn’t realize we had such a technician in the band because he wasn’t part of the last record. He surprised us in that way on this one.”
