Local 913, Episode 46: The Freedom Band

The Freedom Band have been performing reggae style music in the Pittsburgh area for over 15 years, however, they just released their debut album. The core of the band, Chuck Kristan, Donnie Dread Cyrus and Les Bowe, have experienced success in opening for just about every touring reggae act that has come to town like The Wailers, UB40, Burning Spear and Third World, just to name a few. In order to expand their presence, the band decided to finally get down to it and produce a record. The result is Higher, a fantastic collection of original reggae songs. It’s hard to select a standout track, but closing track “Hands Up” sounds like it’s meant to be their signature song. Of the song, Chuck Kristan says, “We’re hoping to turn it into our anthem. It’s one of those songs, that hopefully when people see us perform, they hear it and it just makes you wanna get up and act a fool and get on the dance floor.”
